Dr Josie Barnard investigates the deep social divides created by the digital world and asks what skills are needed to be a digital citizen and the consequences of not having these skills. Dr Barnard talks about the three layers of being digitally engaged:

  1.     Access – do you physically have access to a smartphone or a computer and a decent internet connection?
  2.     Skills – even if you have a smartphone, do you know how to use it?
  3.     How do you use it? – even if you have the smartphone and the basic digital skills, can you use it in a positive and effective way?
