The number of volunteers in the fire service has fallen nearly 20% since levels a decade ago, and the number of paid fire service workers has not risen accordingly.
In the 2009/2010 financial year there were 1015 volunteer fire service members per 100,000 people. In 2018/2019 that number was down to 824 volunteers per 100,000 people. The number of paid fire service employees has increased during that time, but the increase has not matched the level of the fall in volunteers. Last financial year there was a total of 20,700 paid fire fighting staff, of which 15,223 were operational and the rest were support staff roles.
