Backpacker visa rules eased in bid to help regional Australia recover from bushfires

Under new rules, employers in bushfire affected areas may be able to hire the same backpackers for a full year, and volunteer work can count towards visa requirements.

Volunteer groups are calling the visa changes a “win-win-win” for farmers, backpackers, and volunteer organisations. The current visa rules do not allow backpackers and holidaymakers to work for the same employer for more than six months, and volunteer work does not count towards working requirements. The new rules will allow backpackers to work for longer at an employer or volunteer organisation, helping farmers and others to rebuild in disaster zones.
