Safe Conversations

Volunteers often have contact with people who may come from very different backgrounds to what they are used to. Differences in culture, age, gender, nationality and political views can cause volunteers to struggle to make conversation without offending or provoking clients. Volunteers will also learn vital conversation skills that will assist them in everyday life when communicating with people within the community .

Key learning areas:

• Safe topics when making conversation with a client

• How to redirect a conversation that has become

uncomfortable for you or your client

• Listening skills to identify when a client feels awkward or when a change

of topic is required

• Understanding sensitivity

This training is free for all volunteers working or living in the following local government areas; The Blue Mountains, Blacktown, Penrith, Hawkesbury, Parramatta, or Cumberland City Councils.
